A Plagiarist, A Mad Man

Times have changed and tables have turned. We are now at the time when we believe the deceivers and falsifiers and reject the authentic truth-tellers. The truth has failed to satisfy us, thus the instinctive move to accept as true what will make us more renowned in our own rights and in social media.

I thought that after the campaign and the elections, decency will once more be upheld. It was a given that we all became barbaric in our mission to help and protect our presidential and vice presidential candidates. We did everything we can to help them get votes: liking their posts, sharing their stories, posting personal moments with them, commenting on their official pages, spreading lies against their opponents, sharing funny memes favoring them… name it, I believe we all have done it. It died down after the elections. However, for some, especially those who received a lot of attention and gained a following, there is the urge to continue to spread lies and blow a single photo or headline out of proportion.

This seems to be the case of Dr. Antonio Contreras. I knew of him when I was in college. He already had a reputation for liking to be at the forefront of issues, being the center of attention and playing god to his students. I knew he had an axe to grind with Vice President Leni Robredo that’s why he never stopped bashing her on his social media accounts during the elections. Until now however, he has not ceased this divisive action.

Why? Probably because he has not yet moved on from his grudges against the Robredos and Leni is an easy target now being the Vice President; possibly because he gained a lot of attention (interviews & followers) during the election and he cannot resist the urge to post comments or photos that will make him and his statements ‘viral’; or just because ‘he can’ and some people believe him, lies or not.

As I said in my earlier post, equally important to the message is the messenger. Why then should I believe Contreras when he is a known PLAGIARIST himself. He was suspended from UP for it. He claims it is an honest mistake on the part of his research assistant but he plagiarized his RA’s plagiarized work by not citing the RA. Plagiarism was committed in two levels. Moreover, the ‘honest mistake’ excuse is never viable, if that is so, no one would ever be guilty of plagiarism.

He became very outspoken against plagiarism even going after Sen. Tito Sotto when he embarrassingly committed his. I believe this was because one, he wanted the fame that came with it; second, by going against Sen. Sotto, Contreras is trying to show that he himself will not commit plagiarism – a complete hogwash; and third, he was washing his hands of plagiarism he himself committed.

Why should I believe someone who is just out on revenge? Remember, he is lashing out on the Robredos. His version of the truth is without impartiality. Contreras’ cousin RTC Judge Jaime Contreras raped his own daughter. The girl turned to Leni for help, who was then already a Congresswoman. She could not represent the girl in court, thus she referred her to a lawyer friend. The story gets more complicated but to keep it short, the Contreras family kept badgering Leni regarding the whereabouts of the girl but Leni chose to protect the victim. This issue is what is behind Contreras’ attacks. He chose to make what is a moral and legal issue, a family feud. And now, he is taking it out on Leni who is susceptible to attacks given her political stature.

Again, I ask you, why should you believe a PLAGIARIST and an ANGRY MAD MAN who will say anything on social media for fame? There is just no credibility. His command of English may be good, his knowledge of social media may be infallible but his effective use of Facebook and political jargon does not dignify him as someone truthful. His may points may seem valid at times but validity does not equate to truth.

A note to you Tonton Contreras, stop it already. You are the laughing stock of your department and of DLSU. You are bringing shame to the university as you are digging a hole for yourself.

The Bong Who Cried ‘Wolf’

Wolf
Photo grabbed from ‘Imbentong Bongbong’ Facebook page.

I was browsing over my timeline and saw an interesting page called “Imbentong Bongbong”, which had a profile picture of BBM crying foul because of the results of the Vice-Presidential race, when he doesn’t exactly fit in the victim caricature. This is the inspiration of this post.

In the past few days, the camp of Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., has launched a passive-but-mostly-aggressive campaign regarding the results of the Vice-Presidential elections. They were careful to accuse anyone of cheating explicitly, but they were quick and consistent to manipulate scenarios inside citizens’ heads to paint the picture of a rigged elections
The first cry came a day before the elections, when he cockily said that the only way for him to lose is to be cheated. The second cry was made two days after when Marcos came out on TV, worried, agitated, for he was already losing. The first 10 hours after the voting polls closed showed that Marcos was leading against the now front runner Rep. Leni Robredo. “I was leading by almost a million votes. We just went to sleep and woke up to the news that we were already trailing behind” was his response to the situation at that time. Rep. Robredo responded by saying that the first few hours’ transmission of votes came from Marcos’s areas of strongholds, while her bailiwicks came in a little later. At some point, the numbers met in the middle, and eventually, albeit by a hairsplit margin, Robredo took the lead.
It is notable that Marcos thought it was impossible for Robredo to beat him, given his almost a million lead, and because of his position of comfort in the pre-elections surveys (even though Robredo was able to catch up and put him into a statistical tie a few days before the voting), for now he claims that he won the elections with (only) a hundred thousand votes. This is an admission that the VP race is as close as it could be, and the self-anointed son of the north isn’t as powerful as he claimed to be. But to believe he won the elections, one has to ask: Where did his numbers come from and why isn’t his camp showing the computation, the way Robredo has defended her numbers to the public?
We might never find out the process, for transparency isn’t a strong suit of the Marcoses. Maybe the public will never know the answer. In fact, it’s easier to engage in agenda setting, propaganda making, and PR manipulation than to be held accountable to provide evidence for claims implicitly made. But then again, did we really expect a Marcos to be capable of doing the right thing?

Note: I should have posted this prior the official canvassing, however, due to work-related travels, I am only able to do so now. CONGRATULATIONS Vice President-elect Leni Robredo.

An axe to grind

As the election fever winds down and canvassing starts, accusations of “mysterious” number crunching abound, particularly from the camp of Bongbong Marcos against Leni Robredo – who continue to widen the lead in the race to the VP.

These accusations were fronted by David Yap and Antonio Contreras.
Now let’s take a closer look at who these people are.

bayarangbullies

In my previous post, I wrote about David Yap and his possible motives for making such a move. Just a quick recap, both of David Yap’s parents work in the government. His father, David Jonathan Yap used to work at the Senate while his mother, Marilyn Barua-Yap, is the Secretary General at the House of Representatives.

David’s father Jonathan tried to have a family member hired at the Senate by faking a recommendation from then Senate President Enrile. But when Gigi Reyes – Enrile’s girl Friday found out about it, Jonathan was fired. The Yap family kept this issue under wraps, but it is a well-known fact within the four corners of the Senate.

Marilyn, on the other hand, has been involved in major controversies while working at the House of Representatives. She has been known to create positions for her relatives (her daughter and sister work in Congress too!) even if the rules clearly prohibit such acts.

Marilyn’s sister has also gone with her on work-related travels abroad – such wise use of taxpayers’ money, I must say.

(Read: http://www.philstar.com/headlines/599479/belmonte-limits-foreign-travel-house-members).

She also gets commissions for every contract she handles. Most shocking among these was the PCIJ report, which indicated that she bought 350 tables and chairs for Php 8 million, as well as overpriced fire extinguishers.

It is a well-known fact that the Yap family are a bunch of Marcos loyalists. Therefore, ensuring a Marcos win on the VP race benefits them greatly.

David Yap as a neutral observer…DEBUNKED!!!

Now let’s go to the juicy part.

Anton Contreras is in no way juicy but he is definitely fishy.

Who is Antonio Contreras?

If one would notice the articles he writes, they have, for the most part, been throwing punches at the Robredos. It makes me wonder why. What skeletons does he have in the closet? Hmmm.

Antonio Contreras is a professor at the De La Salle University in Manila. His family hails from Bicol. He graduated with a degree in Forestry. With that said, I don’t know how on earth was he able to politicize trees.

Early this year, Anton made the media rounds when he filed a Disqualification Case vs. Grace Poe to stop her bid for the Presidency. This seem noble and all, but one look at his tweets, blogs and FB page, you’ll actually see who the guy behind him was…no other than the Pambansang NogNog! Who on their right mind would even vote for him after all the corruption cases filed against him and his family?

Anton Contreras is the first cousin of Regional Trial Court (RTC) 25 Judge Jaime Contreras of Naga, who was accused of rape by his own daughter just last year.

His daughter sought the help of Congresswoman Leni Robredo, but she couldn’t represent her anymore as she was already busy with her responsibilities at the House of Representatives. Congresswoman Robredo then referred her to one of her lawyer friends.

The Contreras family kept asking Leni to intervene on their behalf but she wouldn’t budge. Leni is first and foremost a mother then a lawyer. It is not in her to turn away someone who needs help, especially someone who is a victim of rape.

I believe the case has been filed…but that’s not all. Jaime Contreras is also facing several sexual harassment cases filed by other female lawyers that he tried to make a pass on. Talk about ewwww DOM much!!!

Jaime Contreras has been suspended and has not been heard from since.

So there you go, this seemingly credible professor actually has dubious intentions just one look at the people behind him and you’ll know.

Anton Contreras is one hell of an academic embarrassment! Perhaps, Anton knows where his dear uncle is hiding. Perhaps, Anton is out to redeem himself after his disqualification case against GP failed. Perhaps, Anton is trying to throw shade at Leni Robredo in his bid to get even.

Again, Antonio Contreras as a neutral observer… DEBUNKED!!!

These beasties are trying to manipulate us by showing flawed and carefully picked data that only shows part of the story. They refuse to acknowledge the facts presented by neutral experts like:

It is up to us to do our homework before believing these BBM apologists – Bayarang Bullies ni Marcos!

David Yap and Antonio Contreras recently came out with statements that there is something “fishy” with the way the votes for the Vice-Presidential race are being counted. They went as far as saying that there is a “deliberate attempt to cheat Marcos to favour Robredo”. These claims were coupled with complex data analyses laced with seemingly pseudo-intellectual political theories and quasi-relatable arguments, but in reality, they are just deceptive and meant-to-be-viral-accusations.

Read: https://www.facebook.com/tonton.contreras/posts/10205321114981549 https://www.facebook.com/tonton.contreras/posts/10205321216224080.

This should stop.

We need to expose the truth behind these lies. Contreras, who has a degree in forestry, has a following for his political opinions and can give out inferences (probably because of intense training from Yap, hehe #RP69FanFic), so I want to join the fun too.

More about him and his broken heart because of a government appointment that didn’t happen later.

I agree that it is important to look at the message. We need to address it, especially if we want a clean electoral system and a credible results of the elections. I want to leave the domain of data analysis to the experts, though, because well, mas kaya nila.

But equally important to the message is the messenger, because let’s not fool ourselves, we all have political interests, and our interests define our actions. We can all cry foul and have the whistleblower spotlight, but is this really an objective, neutral, and sincere call for transparency? Clearly, the answer is no.

Yap enjoys the facade of being an objective third party observer in the elections. The language of math, data, and statistics give him that. “Let’s look at the numbers”, he said. He wants to debunk the victory of Leni Robredo by taking the most controversial, but lightest burden possible: “Leni is cheating. The data is inconclusive, but we will leave the imagination to you.”

Notice that the BBM camp has been strategic and careful in the words that they use. They do not use the word cheating, just that the COMELEC has to explain. They do not say that Team Leni is behind their loss, just that it’s mysterious, how the votes are counted. They haven’t filed a single case to prove their claim, which would require a response from the COMELEC. Instead of taking the burden of proof in their case, if they have any, they shift the blame to the COMELEC, for it’s always easier and more convenient to go against the establishment. They’re taking the game to the court of public perception, where most people are inexperienced to look at the facts, where most people are too busy (or lazy) to do their own research.

Yap “fits” the missing puzzle piece by providing the supposed intellectual explanation for all the controversies: numbers . This is enough to intimidate the common Filipino. Never mind that other more learned people from his profession have continuously criticized the way interpreted his data. Never mind that his credentials pale in comparison compared to these people. Never mind that he is a Marcos apologist. Never mind that the Ateneo de Manila University School of Social Sciences wants to disassociate from him. Never mind all of those. There are a lot more disgusting things about him and his family.

David Yap is the son of David Jonathan Yap and Marilyn Barua-Yap. His father was a former employee at the Senate, who tried to have someone from the family get hired, by making it appear like the then Senate President Enrile recommended him. The truth is, there was no recommendation at all. When Gigi Reyes found out about it, David Jonathan was fired. The family and its backers were able to keep this issue under the radar, but this is a known fact to people inside the Senate.

The mother, Marilyn, is the exciting case. She is the current Secretary-General of the House of Representatives. She was elected to the position during the 14th congress, the height of GMA’s power. While there is an illusion of being “democratically elected”, we have to note that the padrino system was notorious during GMA’s terms. As the Secretary-General, Marilyn has been involved in major controversies like creating positions for her relatives (Marilyn’s sister has gone with her for work-related travels abroad, and David’s youngest sister works at the congress too, I wonder which congressmen went to her recent wedding), even if the rules clearly prohibit it, and allegations of corruption because of frequent travels abroad with relatives (Read: http://www.philstar.com/headlines/599479/belmonte-limits-foreign-travel-house-members), and getting money for every contract she handles.

Most shocking among these was the PCIJ report that she bought 350 tables and chairs for 8, 000, 000, as well as overpriced fire extinguishers. People have to know that the family members are Marcos loyalists and will definitely benefit from a Marcos victory. They are not neutral observers.

These things speak of the ideological inconsistency of Yap. He was quick to be at the forefront of the army of attack dogs against Leni, but his family reeks of corruption and dubious practices. He was quick cry out for transparency, without admitting in his statements that he is a BBM supporter. This Yap-Contreras team seeks nothing close to transparency. They are laying down the groundwork for BBM’s PR team to make him look like the oppressed party.

I can only speculate (as that’s what they’ve been doing) that the goal is to drag down Leni Robredo to a dirty perception war, for a great part of her term. It could also be a ploy to a dangerously chilling strategy: to buy BBM more time to be able to cheat on Leni’s votes.

Right now, there have been moves from the Marcos camp to manually canvass the votes, especially those from Ilocos Norte. Leni’s lead is more or less 200,000 at this point, and a wrong move can spell the difference between protecting the votes of the people, and sending another Marcos to a trip to the Malacañang. And even if Leni wins, people will think it’s because the “data was manipulated”, there was an “irregularity”, and (insert complex jargons we don’t understand but are really cool to listen to). We have to ask ourselves: what is the end goal of this? If you closely look at Yap’s motivations, it is clear that it is to protect the interest of the Marcoses. It’s time for us to expose his real identity. It’s time for us to call him out on his lying.
